The ChemoxyCare range: Multifunctionals and Preservative Boosters for the cosmetic market
In recent years, safety data, legislative reviews and scientific studies on traditional preservatives in personal care (e.g. parabens, formaldehyde donors and isothiazolinones) have resulted in increased precaution from consumers, as well as regulatory bodies. In response to safety concerns, a number of preservatives have been banned or restricted, leaving formulators with very limited options to ensure effective microbial protection.
Driven by the decline of some traditional preservatives and a desire to support the development of alternative options, Seqens Cosmetics created the ChemoxyCare range of straight chain 1, 2-alkanediols (i.e. 1,2 Octanediol, 1,2 Hexanediol and 2-Ethylhexylglycerin). These products have been used for many years as emollients, however their preservative boosting function has recently led to a large uptake in demand.
The advent of Covid-19 has also resulted in an increase in hand hygiene protocols and ChemoxyCare® 8 is being increasingly used as an emollient in hand washes, sanitizers and anti-virals to combat the drying effect on the skin, as the fight against the pandemic continues.
Why use the ChemoxyCare® range?
ChemoxyCare® products are safe and multifunctional. All products can be used in both leave on and rinse off products as a preservative booster / emollient / moisturiser /solvent for other ingredients (e.g. pigments). They are stable in a wide range of formulations across a broad pH range and have an excellent safety and toxicological profile. Choice of product will be dependent on the final formulation, target skin type, required miscibility in water and preservative performance.
Following its successful entry with ChemoxyCare 8 ® Seqens Cosmetics further developed its range of products and now offers:
- ChemoxyCare 6 ® (1,2-Hexanediol)
- ChemoxyCare 8 ® (1,2-Octanediol / Caprylyl glycol)
- ChemoxyCare 2-EHG ® (Ethylhexylglycerin)
Knowledge gained from the existing ChemoxyCare ® range has also led to development of:
- ChemoxyCare 5 ® (1,2-Pentanediol/ Pentylene Glycol)
- ChemoxyCare 10 (1,2-Decanediol / Decylene Glycol)
- ChemoxyCare 12 (1,2-Dodecanediol / Lauryl Glycol)
A new production unit based in Billingham, UK
The controlled reaction chemistry and sophisticated distillation capabilities at Seqens Cosmetics has enabled the company to offer very high purity material for use in personal care. Now further supported by SEQENS’ significant investment in this core market sector, with world scale capacity and state of the art controls, the business is set for continued growth.
With significant y-o-y growth in demand and longer-term positive projections for this market, it soon became apparent that the existing plant would not be able to keep up with demand.
Thus, the board set out its plans to build a world scale diols plant at its Billingham facility.
Built with exacting standards of quality and efficiency, and importantly, with the highest Health and Safety standards, this new unit if of unique scale in terms of its capacity is also entirely dedicated to the production of products for the cosmetics sector.
This investment has enabled greater production volumes of the initial range of products, ChemoxyCare 8®, ChemoxyCare 6®, ChemoxyCare 2-EHG® and in addition, development of a wider range for 2021 as referred above.
